APS Users, Read This First

If you are using an Automated Pancreas System (APS) such as Loop, Trio, iAPS, or AAPS, this page is important and will save you time and frustration.

Nightscout works slightly differently when paired with an APS compared to manual or non-looping setups.

The most important thing to know

If you are using an APS system, your APS app is usually the source of truth.

That means:

  • Profiles, targets, and settings are managed in your APS app
  • These settings are uploaded automatically to Nightscout
  • Manual changes made directly in Nightscout may be ignored or overwritten

If your APS is working correctly and data is flowing into Nightscout, you often do not need to change anything in Nightscout itself.

Why changes sometimes do not appear in Nightscout

A common source of confusion is when users change a setting in their APS app but do not immediately see it reflected in Nightscout.

In Loop, Trio, and iAPS:

  • Profile updates are typically uploaded when the system detects a change
  • In some cases, activating an override on your phone triggers the latest profile to be sent to Nightscout

If you have recently updated a profile and Nightscout still shows old values, try enabling and disabling an override in your APS app.

What Nightscout is used for in APS setups

In APS setups, Nightscout is primarily used for:

  • Viewing and sharing data
  • Remote monitoring by caregivers
  • Visualising trends and history
  • Reports and long-term review

Nightscout is usually not where core treatment decisions are made in an APS workflow.

What you should usually leave alone

If you are using an APS system, it is usually best not to change:

  • Profiles in Nightscout
  • Insulin settings in Nightscout
  • Targets and timing values
  • Advanced Config Vars

These are typically controlled by your APS app instead.

When you might need to change something

You may need to make changes in Nightscout if:

  • You are advised to by APS documentation
  • You are troubleshooting a specific issue
  • You are setting display-only preferences such as themes or time format

If you are unsure, leaving the setting unchanged is usually the safest option.

Summary for APS users

  • Your APS app controls most settings
  • Nightscout reflects what the APS uploads
  • Overrides often trigger profile updates
  • Manual Nightscout changes may not stick
  • If it is working, do not fix it

If you are ever unsure whether a setting should be changed in Nightscout or in your APS app, it is safest to assume it belongs in the APS app.
